The 19th arrondissement of Paris is «full of details, like a novel» wrote Léon Paul Fargue in 1951.
As writer of forewords to the most illustrious post-war photography books, he asserted his attachment to this old suburb that famous authors such as Robert Doisneau, Willy Ronis and René-Jacques roamed around and documented time and again. But it was more by drawing inspiration from the American photography that Thomas Boivin, for his part, created his “portrait of the neighborhood”: the physiognomy of the city and its inhabitants is what is here at work, a fresh physiognomy renewed by a contemporary eye that knows how to linger on details and how to approach its fellow human beings. Thomas Boivin gives new life to the genre of street photography.e.
